Can I Use My FSA or HSA for IV Therapy?

Can I Use My FSA or HSA for IV Therapy?

If you’ve got a Flexible Spending Account (FSA) or Health Savings Account (HSA), you already know they can be a great way to cover certain healthcare costs with pre-tax dollars. But many people aren’t sure whether IV therapy especially wellness-focused options like NAD+, hydration drips, and vitamin infusions, qualifies. Here’s what you need to know.

What Are FSA and HSA Accounts?

  • FSA (Flexible Spending Account) – An employer-sponsored account you put pre-tax money into for eligible medical expenses.

  • HSA (Health Savings Account) – A personal health account available to those with high-deductible health plans (HDHPs), also funded with pre-tax dollars, but you own it and it can grow year to year.

Both reduce your taxable income, meaning you keep more of your money while covering health-related costs.

Who Can Get Them?

  • FSAs – Offered by many employers as part of benefits packages. You can’t get one on your own unless your employer offers it.

  • HSAs – Available if you’re enrolled in an HSA-eligible high-deductible health plan. You can open one through your employer or directly with a bank or HSA provider.

Why Is There a Tax Benefit?

Every dollar you contribute to an FSA or HSA isn’t taxed so you can save anywhere from 10% to 37% depending on your income bracket. HSAs add an extra benefit: money can also be invested and grow tax-free if you don’t spend it right away.

Do They Roll Over?

  • FSA – Most are “use it or lose it” by the end of the plan year, but some employers allow a grace period (often until March 15 of the following year) or let you carry over a small amount (e.g., $640 in 2024).

  • HSA – Always rolls over year to year. Funds never expire.

When Can You Use FSA/HSA Funds?

You can use the money anytime during your coverage period for eligible expenses. For FSAs, that’s generally within the plan year (plus any grace period). For HSAs, funds can be used at any time.
